Yong Sook Kim-Lambert left her homeland in 1988 and her experience of being uprooted is expressed through her art. Originally from South Korea, she now lives in the Eastern Townships where she has raised her children in accordance with the cultures of her two identities. For Yong Sook Kim-Lambert, being able to create art allows her to examine her background in depth. She travelled to many countries and explored different cultures – a life experience that informs her multidisciplinary (and constantly evolving) artistic practice.
The exhibition Empreintes 발자취 employs a variety of media – printmaking, painting and silk screening – which Yong Sook Kim-Lambert uses to express her emotive and introspective approach to her “inner landscape”. Her canvases are bold and impactful and sometimes feature silhouettes of bodies drawn in ink or words expressed in her native language – portraits and abstract compositions that speak of her inner conflicts and her need to constantly re-examine her true identity. Her works combine painting, Korean calligraphy and a variety of engraving techniques.
The artist holds a degree in the Fine Arts from Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea and since then, she has exhibited her work in Asia, Europe and America. Her art is now part of a number of public and private collections in Canada and the United States. Yong Sook Kim-Lambert was awarded the 1st prize at the State Museum of Pennsylvania 2001 National Art Competition. Most recently, she received a grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ).
