Stéphanie Filion, a poet and visual artist, weaves together words and paper to create collages, cyanotypes and zines (mini publications). The artist residencies she has participated in have allowed her to explore poetry’s vital role in the world, beyond mere words. Her approach looks at everyday life through this prism and she composes artwork that combines fragments of old books and magazines, to create an ongoing dialogue between the literary worldand the paper’s texture.
In this exhibition, Stéphanie Filion has come up with what could loosely be described as a “poem generator”. This interactive project is based on her extensive collection of the various elements that comprise her artistic practice. Filion is creating a constantly evolving archive of the past and making it accessible to the general public. This one-of-a-kind exhibit allows visitors to cocreate an audiovisual poem by choosing a particular emotion, then picking out verses, images and sounds from Filion’s poetic universe – an intimate, immersive experience.
Stéphanie Filion holds a Master’s Degree (MA) in Literature from The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) and she has been publishing collections of poetry, novels, short stories and essays for over fifteen years. Filion’s artistic practise is diverse, from creating collages to employing a variety of media to express herself with profound, emotive words. She has participated in numerous group exhibitions both in Quebec and abroad. Along with creating art, she works with different groups of people, helping them to develop their creativity and to explore different literary and visual approaches.
The artist thanks the Canada Council for the Arts for its support.

This winter, three artists will be exhibiting a series of artworks that focus on intimacy, introspection and personal stories. Yong Sook Kim-Lambert, a Korean-Canadian multidisciplinary artist, explores how her identity has been shaped by both her country of origin and her adopted homeland. Zaynab Ghaïs-Mortada, a photographer and philosopher, has put together a series of images drawn in part from her own archives. Lastly, Stéphanie Filion, a poet, invites exhibition goers to create their own narratives, inspired by whatever emotions they are feeling at the time.
