As a self-taught artist, Luce Meunier has been experimenting with painting techniques for over twenty years. She takes a bare, minimalist approach to the materials she works with and has come up with a variety of processes. These processes allow her to play around with the way pigments can react when mixed with water in its different forms â from drops of liquid to snow. Meunier typically applies the colours with a simple tool such as a sponge or let the snow melt on the canvas. The manner in which the canvas absorbs the liquids affects the final appearance of her compositions, as does gravity. The artist sometimes applies the colours vertically and sometimes horizontally.
The exhibition Crues is a body of work produced by Luce Meunier over the past ten years. Curated by Sylvie Lacerte, the paintings were created almost haphazardly. Like a bystander, Luce Meunier does not attempt to manipulate the result of her work. Rather, she allows the colours to flow quite naturally on to the canvas. When the snowballs melt and with the passage of time, the resulting images emerge organically â sometimes in the form of pale, diluted patches of colour and sometimes in blurry designs. The effect of time is an important aspect of Meunierâs work because, like a scientist, she experiments with colour and records her observations.
Luce Meunier has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions across Canada, but primarily in Montreal where she lived since the beginning of her career. In 2024, she moved to Valcourt. Meunier has also completed a number of artist residencies, notably in Banff (Alberta) and in France. She is the recipient of several grants and her work can be found in a number of private and public collections.
The artist is represented by the Bradley Ertaskiran Gallery in Montreal. She would like to thank the Gallery as well as the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec (CALQ) for its financial support.

The exhibitions running throughout this summer season showcase two artists known for their innovative work. MatiĂšre refuge is an assemblage of handcrafted paper and embroidery, created by VĂ©ronique Buist. Luce Meunierâs large-format paintings, presented in the exhibition Crues, are the outcome of years of trial and error. Each artist, in her own way, has reinvented the way in which they approach their chosen medium, letting herself be guided by the creative process.
