HUA JIN
Flow

Through her photographs and videos, Hua Jin documents changes in the rhythm and cycles of the natural world over the passage of time. Her artistic practice is informed by the tenets of Taoist philosophy – namely, the need to live in harmony with nature and the universe. The concepts of permanence and evanescence lie at the heart of her contemplative works, in which she explores the spiritual, memorial and meditative aspects of nature and the human stories they reveal.

In the exhibition Flow, Hua Jin’s photographs and videos invite the viewer to truly absorb the textures and colors of nature. Her depictions of water transform before our very eyes into engrossing, abstract images. In her monochrome compositions, Jin captures the ripple of waves, the reflections of the setting sun, the sparkle of a starry sky – refined images that record fleeting moments which, through her lens, remain fixed for ever.

The photography installation attached to the windows is a brand-new corpus of images generated by artificial intelligence (AI). Jin has worked with IT specialists to create surreal compositions (somewhere between real and fake) inspired by her photographs. By employing new technologies, the artist shows her willingness to take an innovative approach to her work by combining art and algorithms.

Born in China, artist Hua Jin now lives in Montreal. She holds a Fine Arts Photography BFA from Emily Carr University of Art and Design (Vancouver) and a Studio Arts Photography MFA from Concordia University (Montreal). Her work has been exhibited in numerous exhibitions on the local, national, and international scenes, including in the United States, Mexico, China and Europe. In 2018, she received the Prix de la diversité culturelle en arts visuels (Cultural Award in the Visual Arts) awarded jointly by the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Ville de Montréal.

Couleurs passagères

In the exhibition Couleurs passagères, the Centre d’exposition Yvonne L. Bombardier showcases the work of two unique artists – Hua Jin and Nadia Loria Legris. Each in her own particular way, manipulates the colours of nature to create sensitive, evocative works.  Hua Jin documents the relationship between the passage of time and colour,  capturing fleeting, beautiful moments with stills and moving images. For her part, Nadia Loria Legris gives us an entirely different view of the organic matter that we discard every day. She extracts inks from the greenery that grows around every urban landscape and uses them to paint expressive, striking works of art. Legris also creates installation art with bits and pieces of organic waste.
