Johanne Martel explores the world from a great distance and also close-up. She creates the impression of a unified whole between the macro and the micro, through the technique of reverse painting on glass, which she employs in most of her work. Filtering the images through glass intensifies the poetic effect. Even though the vastness of the universe predominates, it is the tiny details that draw the attention of the viewer. One does not exclude the other. Looking at the details of a piece depicting turbulent water, for example, one is reminded of the immensity of the solar system. The effect is pure poetry, shrouding reality in a misty veil – an impression that borders on the surreal.
