Artist Günes-Hélène Isitan uses a hybrid approach to her art, blending philosophy and microbiology, inviting the viewer to reconsider exactly what it means to be human. The result of a collaboration between a photographer and bacterial painters, these three series challenge the assumption that humans are exceptional, by questioning not only our relationships with invisible (but omnipresent) microorganisms, but also by exploring the imaginary boundaries between us and the latter.
Through her prints, multispecies self portraits, a video and live installations, Isitan illustrates that the lines between human beings and other organisms are more blurred than most people think, showing us that humankind is deeply interwoven with the world that gave us life.
