From caterpillar to butterfly
Marcellin Dufour was born at Port-Alfred in the Saguenay in 1946. Growing in that picturesque part of Quebec, where a fjord passes through the dominant forests, he will have the desire to either become a musician or a painter. In his teen years, he finally chooses painting. Right from the beginning, he will attract attention and will be compared to Riopelle and Borduas. From 1966 to 1988, Dufour being independent develops with tenacity his very own style. His talent will evolve from figurative to abstraction. The United Nation Organization will choose one of his works to illustrate about education, science and culture the Earth Day poster for the UNESCO in 1993. After a maturation of 30 years, Dufour will find his life, work and career depicted in a wonderful book written by Guy Robert, an author and art historian in 1995. That same year, Marcellin Dufour is the guest of honor at the Art’95 exhibition in Neufchatel, Switzerland. Lately, Dufour worked at opening new markets in Western Canada. He transfers his art onto three dimensional objects, mainly vases. His works appear in many private and corporate art collections all over Canada and Europe.
The abstract landscape painter
Dufour’s style is characterized by the fusion and the relation between figurative and abstract, between space and time, between light and life. He is permeated with his native region: nature is omnipresent in each of his works, constantly visible yet sublimated at times. Working mainly with acrylic, the artist makes movement and rhythm his favorites. Inspired mostly by landscapes on his inner side, his paintings are captivating, mysterious sometimes leaving space for the imaginary. Some are made up of strokes, symbols, multicolored shapes yet, remarkably harmonious suggesting sweet moments of escape away from our daily turmoil.
