Figurative artist and renowned landscape painter Catherine Young Bates presents at the Yvonne L. Bombardier Cultural Centre her first important solo exhibition in the Eastern Townships, her adoptive region and perpetual source of inspiration.
The Lake Memphremagog region is a favourite subject, inspiring her to constantly reinterpret the landscape around Owl’s Head Mountain. Her vibrant still lifes as well as the ICARUS series, where winged creatures fly over magnificent panoramas, are sought after by art connoisseurs. Well beyond precise topographical descriptions, her landscapes reveal intangible elements such as wind, breath and motion, capturing space and places with a bold formal and technical approach.
Her long career as professor in visual arts, poet, art critic and prolific painter, has earned Bates a well-deserved membership in the Royal Canadian Academy (RCA). Catherine Young Bates’ recent works, many or which have never been exhibited before, will be a wonderful discovery for visitors of the Yvonne L. Bombardier Cultural Centre.
